Heart of Darkness is a charming read--unbelievable it was written 100 or so years ago. You've done a great job summarizing it, Andrew.

I ran across this site totally by accident. I know this isn't until next November but I thought you might be interested. I'm kind of surprised I've never heard of it before now...

HA! I made Becky read Dun Cow and she hated it. I'll have to tell her you agree with me. She kept saying I was reading Rockadoodle.

Thanks for the comment, Danny. The point wasn't really to make any kind of definitive statement of love, but to attempt a fictional accounting of a man's loss. I completely agree that long-term relationships are hard work and difficult, but everyone's experience is different, and relying on the memory of a thing instead of the current presence of a thing can drastically alter one's perception. This is just one make-believe guy's story.

I think your comparison to love is a bit off. I think that when you really look down deep at the whole thing, it's easier and more secure as a ball of yarn grows. Anyone who's been married or dated someone for more than five years will tell you that it actually gets even harder as you go rather than easier. I'd elaborate, but I am writing my own article.

I don't know- is the Dark Tower series fantasy?

Most everything I've read from King is like that. Personally I find his short stories stronger than his novels. But I'm odd.

YAH! I suggested this one because I read it this summer. Fantastic. Home is good as well- it's about Rev Boughton's daughter taking care of him as he gets older, and the issues that arise when the son comes home- it's takes place at roughly the same time as Gilead with lots of overlap. Not as good, but still one of the better books I've read as of late.

Robinson actually wrote a collection of essays praising Calvin called The Death of Adam that I'd like to read at some point.

Makes me want to write more for my family. We've talked about writing something special for each of our family members for Christmas this year instead of buying gifts. This book's probably next on my fiction list after I finish The Tale of Genji.
